Put an Afrobeats spin on a One Direction hit and yeah, you're going to get noticed. Especially when the track comes out so well. That's what Adekunle Gold did to jump-start his career in 2015. The Nigerian singer's 'Gold' debut got its early notice from "Sade," a spin on 1D's "The Story Of My Life," and along with "Pick Up" and "Orente" the newcomer's first volley powered its way onto the Top 10 of Billboard's World Music chart. It was time to pay attention. Lots of fans have do just that ever since. Gold's rhythmic template opened the doors to a parade of impressive songs that stretch from "Friend Zone" and "Nurse Alabere" to "Sinner," "High," and "Five Star." Gold, who grew up smitten with 80s heroes King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey and was a member of his church's junior choir, wrote his first song at 15 - dude had a direction. That trajectory has led him to last summer's 'Tequila Ever After,' and more recently, our performance studio. Check the way he leads his band through "Don't Be a Baby" and "Ogaranya/Wrong Person." He's become quite masterful since that boy band nod.
