In five of Maryland’s Congressional districts, voters are expected to send well-known incumbents back to the House of Representatives. As St. Mary’s College of Maryland political science professor Todd Eberly explains, incumbency has advantages.
“Name recognition, you’ve got an organization already in place people tend to give you more money because the odds are you’ll stay in office,” said Eberly. “So it’s the open races that tend to bring people out and encourage them to run.”
In Maryland this year there are three open congressional seats: in the 2nd district which is mostly Baltimore County, the 3rd district which is Howard County and some of Anne Arundel, and the 6th district which is western Maryland, Frederick County and the northern section of Montgomery county.
In those races, there are literally dozens of candidates.
“I try to imagine what would happen if there was a candidate’s forum that tried to give equal time to each of the candidates equal amount of time,” Eberly joked. “It would take a week.”
