Escuela Key Elementary School teacher Pat Hynes didn’t take a traditional route to get to her Arlington County classroom. Her career includes work as an attorney and a Fairfax County school board member.

“It's a great place to work and a great place to be a kid," Hynes told 7News from her fifth-grade classroom.

As Hynes nears 20 years of teaching, she reflects upon a poignant anniversary.

Twenty years ago, Hynes faced the terrifying double diagnosis of breast cancer and melanoma. The second diagnosis came only six months after the first.
